Free food when you arrive with nothing

New to the house with no money, food, or ID? Here’s how to eat today and get groceries coming in the next week or so. Every program below is free. We don’t run them, so call ahead because hours change.

First 72 hours: what to do
  1. Eat today: go to a free meal or pantry near your house (see the lists below by area).
  2. Call 211, free and open 24/7. Ask for food delivery and pantries for your ZIP code. Broward: 211 or 954-390-0493. Miami-Dade: 211 or 305-631-4211. You can also text your ZIP code to 898211.
  3. Apply for SNAP (food stamps) today on MyACCESS. If you have almost no income and almost no money, you may get expedited (fast) SNAP, with benefits approved within about 7 days. No ID? Apply anyway. DCF can confirm who you are in other ways.
  4. Broward houses: call Poverello at 954-561-3663 about weekly emergency groceries while you wait for SNAP. Ask if delivery is available.
  5. When your EBT card comes in the mail, set your PIN at 1-888-356-3281. Then you can order groceries online for pickup or delivery.

Expedited SNAP (fast food stamps)

Free

Reentry

You may qualify for fast processing if you have less than $150 in income this month and $100 or less in cash or bank accounts. DCF screens every application for this, so answer the money questions honestly. Florida policy is to approve within 4 days when you don’t already have an EBT card. Then the card is mailed, which takes 5–7 business days. Use an address where you can get mail.

No ID? Apply anyway. You’ll need to confirm who you are, but DCF can do that by talking with someone who knows you or by asking questions online. Other papers can come later.
DCF Call Center: 850-300-4323

Most adults 18–64 without children can get SNAP for 3 months. To keep it longer, they need to work or join a job-training program about 80 hours a month. Living in a sober home doesn’t count as an exemption, but being in a treatment program might. Tell DCF your situation.

Order groceries online with EBT

Once you have your EBT card and PIN, you can order groceries online with SNAP from stores like Walmart, Amazon, Aldi, Publix, and others for pickup or delivery. Check each store’s website to see if it delivers to your ZIP code.

Good to know: SNAP pays only for food. Delivery, service, and tip fees need a separate debit or credit card. Some stores offer free pickup for EBT orders.

Programs that deliver food

Most free delivery programs are for adults 60 and older, or people who are homebound, disabled, or have a chronic illness. Ask anyway, and say if you have a health condition.

The clinic may ask for proof that you're homeless before you register. That proof often comes from the TaskForce Fore Ending Homelessness outreach team. Call first and ask whether a letter from Blue Waters on letterhead is enough. If they want the outreach team, the white vans are at these places every week:

  • Sun 1 PM: 5th Avenue Church of God, 211 NW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale
  • Mon 3 PM: St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 318 NW 6th Ave, Fort Lauderdale
  • Tue 3 PM: Parking lot at NW 4th Ave & NW 2nd St (west side of NW 4th), Fort Lauderdale
  • Wed & Thu 3 PM: North Fork Park, 200 NW 18th Ave, Fort Lauderdale
  • Fri 11 AM: LifeNet4Families, 1 NW 33rd Terrace, Lauderhill
  • Sat 1 PM: Main Library / Stranahan Park, 50 Broward Blvd, Fort Lauderdale

Call the Homeless Helpline at (954) 563-4357 to confirm where the team is that day. Ask the outreach worker for a written homeless verification.

What to bring: photo ID (or whatever ID you have), your Social Security card or number, any insurance or Medicaid letters, proof of income or no income (pay stubs, benefits award letter, or a support letter), the homeless verification letter, and a list of your medications and past diagnoses.

Van schedule: Broward Partnership (checked Oct 2026). Times can change, so call the Helpline first.

Anger management

Learning to handle anger is part of staying sober. It helps you keep a job, protects your relationships, and keeps you out of trouble. Start with the free options, or choose a class if a judge, probation officer or employer requires one.

Court-ordered? Before you pay for anything, ask your judge, probation officer or attorney which programs and how many hours they'll accept, and whether an online class counts. Once you enroll, give them the enrollment letter, and finish before your court date. Keep a copy of your certificate.

SAMHSA Anger Management workbook (free download)

Free

A free 12-session workbook from the federal substance use agency, written for people in addiction and mental health recovery. Each session has a short summary and worksheets for spotting your triggers, building an "anger control plan" and practicing calmer responses. Epilepsy & seizures

Seizures can happen while coming off alcohol or benzodiazepines (like Xanax or Klonopin) and during early recovery, even if you don't have epilepsy. If you've had a seizure, see a doctor and let a manager know. The programs below help people with epilepsy get care and medication for free or at low cost. This page is general information, not medical advice.

Call 911 for a seizure that lasts more than 5 minutes, seizures back to back, an injury, trouble breathing, or a first-ever seizure.

Also see: Epilepsy that isn't controlled with treatment can qualify for SSI or SSDI. See Disability / SSI. Want to drive? See Getting A Vehicle.

Hospital stays aren't covered.

Florida Department of Health: Epilepsy Medication Assistance Program

A state safety-net program that provides seizure medication when you can't pay for it. You qualify if you live in Florida, you're uninsured (or can't afford your copay or deductible), your net family income is at or below 100% of the federal poverty level, you have $2,500 or less in savings and assets (not counting a home you own), and you're not on Medicaid. If someone near you has a seizure

Free

Most seizures end on their own in a few minutes. Stay with the person and time it. Keep them safe: move hard or sharp things away and put something soft under their head. Turn them on their side if they aren't awake. Don't put anything in their mouth (no one can swallow their tongue), and don't hold them down. Stay until they're awake and alert. Call 911 if it lasts more than 5 minutes, another one follows, they're hurt or have trouble breathing, or it's their first seizure.

Reentry: after jail or prison

Need a letter of residency? Probation, ID and benefits offices often ask for a Blue Waters letter of residency. Let a manager know at least 48 hours before you need it.

Practical help for people leaving jail or prison in Broward and nearby Miami-Dade: reentry case management, jobs, ID documents, sealing/expungement workshops, and workforce programs that welcome justice-involved applicants. Get your mugshot taken down for free (Florida law)

Free

Reentry

Mugshot websites in Florida cannot charge you to remove your booking photo. Under Florida Statute §901.43, you can send a written removal request, and the site must take the photo down within 10 calendar days, free of charge, and never repost it. If a site refuses or asks for money, that counts as an unfair or deceptive trade practice under Chapter 501, Part II, and you can sue to force removal, with penalties of $1,000 a day.

Have a conviction? You're still covered. Most sites only remove listings for dismissed, not-guilty, sealed or expunged cases. Florida law (§901.43) covers you even without that paperwork: any site in the business of publishing mugshots must remove yours for free within 10 days of your registered-mail letter.

How to do it:

  1. Find the site’s registered agent. For Florida companies, search Sunbiz. Otherwise check the site’s “Contact” or “Legal” page, or that state’s business registry.
  2. Mail the letter below by registered mail from the Post Office. The law requires registered mail; the removal is free, but you pay the postage. Keep your receipt.
  3. Include a copy of your ID and the exact web address (URL) of each photo.
  4. If it isn’t removed in 10 days, file a complaint with the Florida Attorney General and call Legal Aid. Also ask Google to drop the page from search results.

Name shown: [Name as it appears]

Under Florida Statute § 901.43(2), I request that you remove this photograph and all associated information within 10 calendar days of receiving this letter, without charge, and that you not republish or redisseminate it. A copy of my government-issued ID is enclosed as proof of identity.

Please be aware that under § 901.43(4), refusing to remove the photograph, or republishing it after this request, is an unfair or deceptive trade practice under Part II of Chapter 501, Florida Statutes, and § 901.43(3) allows a civil action for an injunction, civil penalties, and attorney fees.

Try the site's own removal form first (steps for popular sites)

Most mugshot sites have their own removal page, usually linked in the footer as "Remove," "Removal," "Contact," or "Opt out." It's often faster than the letter. Never pay for removal. Have ready: the exact page URL, your ID, and court paperwork if you have it (dismissed, nolle prossed, not guilty, sealed or expunged).

  • Mugshots.zone (also runs BustedNewspaper): copy your listing's URL, then open mugshots.zone/remove-a-listing (or "Remove Mugshot" in the footer). Enter your name, email, phone (they call to verify) and the URL, choose the reason, and upload your court document or a lawyer's letter. Allow 5 to 10 days.
  • Mugshots.com: removal is free but only with expungement, sealing, no information filed, identity theft or death. Email a legible, judge-signed court document plus your Mugshots.com ID to mugshots.com1@gmail.com. See their site policies. Up to 10 business days.
  • Arrests.org (florida.arrests.org): find the number at the end of your listing's URL, then go to arrests.org/remove/?id=YOUR_NUMBER, pick a reason and upload documents. Can take 5 to 30 days.
  • JailBase: open your listing on jailbase.com and choose the removal option. It's free and verifies you with codes sent to your email and cell phone. Can take 30 to 90 days.
  • BustedMugshots and other sites: look for a removal or contact link in the footer. If a Florida site asks you to pay, don't. Send the §901.43 letter above instead.

Screenshot every request you submit. If nothing happens, send the registered-mail letter. The 10-day legal deadline starts once it's received.

Housing: Section 8 / Housing Choice Vouchers

Section 8 (the Housing Choice Voucher, or HCV, program) helps people with very low incomes pay rent in the private market. Each local housing authority runs its own waiting list. Most lists in South Florida open only for short windows, and every list below was closed or had no open window posted when we checked the official sites on Oct 6, 2026. Applying is always free. Status changes fast, so check the official link before you count on any of this.

Jump to: How Section 8 works · Broward · Miami-Dade · Palm Beach · Special vouchers & housing search

How Section 8 works

Read this first. It explains the waitlists and how to avoid scams.

Section 8 basics: waitlists, applying, and scams

Reentry

A voucher pays part of your rent straight to a landlord who accepts it. Usually you pay about 30% of your adjusted income. Waits are long, often 2–7 years, and most lists are closed most of the time. When a list opens, it is usually online only for a few days, and many agencies pick names by random lottery, so applying in the first minute doesn’t help.

  • Apply to several housing authorities. They are separate agencies with separate lists, and you can be on more than one at a time.
  • Keep your contact info updated. Write down your confirmation number. Report any new address, phone, or email in writing or in the agency’s portal. If they can’t reach you, they can drop you from the list.
  • Applications are free. Never pay anyone to “get you on the list” or move you up. Real openings are announced on the housing authority’s own website. Be careful with look-alike sites.
  • Background screening applies. Housing authorities check criminal history. Some offenses are an automatic denial by law, and others are reviewed case by case. Ask the agency about its policy and how to show rehabilitation. Legal aid can help if you are denied.

Emergency Housing Vouchers (EHV): HUD discontinued EHV funding, and the Broward County Housing Authority ended its EHV program June 30, 2026. Don’t count on a new EHV.

Some vouchers come through a referral from a partner agency, not the regular waitlist. These are the real local pathways, plus free tools for finding affordable rentals now.

HUD-VASH vouchers (veterans)

For veterans

HUD-VASH pairs a Section 8 voucher with VA case management for veterans who are homeless. You don’t join a housing authority waitlist for VASH. The VA refers you. Ask a VA homeless services care coordinator. Miami VA covers Miami-Dade and Broward, and West Palm Beach VA covers Palm Beach County.

Mainstream & Non-Elderly Disabled (NED) vouchers

Disability

These vouchers are for households with a member age 18–61 who has a disability. Many Mainstream slots are also for people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or leaving an institution. Housing authorities open these lists separately from regular Section 8, so ask each one about Mainstream or NED openings. West Palm Beach Housing Authority opened a NED waitlist on May 26, 2026, so check its site for current status. BCHA had no open lists of any kind on Oct 6, 2026.

Tip: Ask your case manager, Broward Behavioral Health Coalition provider, or disability services provider whether they make Mainstream referrals.

Family Unification (FUP) & Foster Youth to Independence (FYI) vouchers

FUP and FYI also serve youth ages 18–24 who left foster care at 16 or older and are homeless or at risk. You can’t apply directly. The local child welfare agency must refer you. In Broward that’s ChildNet, and in Miami-Dade it’s Citrus Family Care Network. Ask your caseworker.

Getting a vehicle

A car can make work, meetings and appointments much easier, but the license comes first. Every free car program and credit union loan below requires a valid driver license.

Steps, in order: (1) Check your license status and clear unpaid tickets or fees. A payment plan is available. (2) If you have a DUI suspension, complete DUI school and apply for a hardship (work-only) license. (3) Save for tag, title and insurance, since even free cars come with those costs. (4) Apply for a free car or get pre-approved for a credit union loan before you shop. (5) Avoid "buy here, pay here" lots, which often charge 20%+ interest and repossess quickly. Until then, see Transportation for free and reduced bus passes.

Broward Clerk of Courts: check and reinstate your license

Free

Reentry

Look up your Florida license status for free and see every unpaid ticket or fee holding it up. Unpaid tickets can go on a payment plan, which you set up in person with your ID ($25 per case). Reinstatement costs $60 in person or $65 online once everything is cleared. Each spring, the Clerk runs Operation Green Light, which reduces late fees (the 2026 event was March–April).

DUI suspension: hardship license, FR-44 insurance and interlock

Reentry

After a DUI, you can apply for a hardship license (work and business driving only) at the Bureau of Administrative Reviews in your county. You'll need proof you finished DUI school and any court-ordered treatment. Before reinstatement, you must carry FR-44 insurance (higher liability limits) for 3 years. If the court or your conviction requires an ignition interlock device, it must be installed in a car you own or regularly drive.

Epilepsy or seizures and driving

Under Florida rule 15A-5.004, you generally must be seizure-free for 2 years before a license is issued or reinstated. If you're under regular medical care, you can apply after 6 months seizure-free, and the state Medical Advisory Board will review your case. After a single seizure with a normal EEG, the Board may reconsider after 3 months. Your treating doctor fills out the Medical Report form (HSMV 72423). Epilepsy Alliance Florida can help with the form too.
